According to state media, militants launched an attack in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula on Friday — leading to the deaths of at least 184 people in one of the deadliest civilian ambushes during the rebellion against Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi’s government, The Associated Press reported.

The attack by a suicide bomber and gunmen occurred during prayers at a mosque located in the town of Bir al-Abd, according to Egypt’s ambulance authority and authorities cited by Egypt’s state television. Three police officers — speaking on the condition of anonymity— told the AP the assailants began opening fire from four off-road vehicles.

They added victims are being transported to local hospitals and said the militants barricaded escape routes from the area by detonating cars and leaving the debris there to block the roads, the report said.
