Top U.S. Spy Says Russia Planning Attempt To Undermine 2018 Midterm Elections

The United States government's top intelligence official warned on Tuesday that he anticipates Russia to continue using similar tactics that they employed during the 2016 presidential campaign in order to undermine the upcoming midterm elections, according to The Washington Post.

“There should be no doubt that Russia perceives its past efforts” during 2016 "as a success," and it "views the 2018 midterm elections" as another opportunity, according to Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats.

Coats also said that Congress needs to take action to shrink the growing national debt, which "represents a dire threat to our economic and national security," especially due to a "fractious" partisan environmental across the capital which "is threatening our ability to properly defend our nation."

Coats delivered his remarks at the start of the Senate Intelligence Committee's annual hearing on worldwide threats to national security, and his concerns were echoed by several other intelligence agency heads during the hearing, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who two weeks ago warned that he had "every expectation" that Russia would attempt to influence the upcoming elections.
