UN Ambassador Nikki Haley Resigns, Trump Accepts

Nikki Haley, U.S. President Donald Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations resigned Tuesday morning prior to an Oval Office meeting, The New York Times reported.

Haley was not always a Trump supporter and, in fact, was an early and frequent critic of the president, the Times reported. When he named her his envoy to the world body weeks after his election in November 2016, the appointment was seen as an olive branch.

As ambassador, Haley was both an outspoken and often forceful envoy, the report said, believed to be someone whom foreign diplomats looked to for guidance from an administration known for haphazard and inconsistent policy positions.

Haley voiced strong opinions on big policy issues high on her agenda, like Iran and North Korea, the report said. She was also known for her persuasive powers with the president on issues like Russia sanctions, refugee resettlement and the value of the United Nations itself.

Haley first discussed her resignation plans last week when she visited Trump at the White House, Fox News – quoting an Axios report – said. The outlet reported the news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the administration.
